History of the Chair:
Sitting on rocks
Sitting on the floor---a sign of intimacy
The chair is of extreme antiquity, although for many centuries and pre-dating the birth of Christ, it was an article of state and dignity rather than an article of ordinary use. “The Chair” is still considered the focus of authority in many areas such as public meetings. It’s general use started to become more common in the 16th Century.
In ancient Egypt chairs were fashioned of a variety of materials such as: ebony and ivory, or of carved and gilded wood or papyrus leaves woven together. But, if you were a pharos or queen, you had an elaborate chair or throne made from some type of precious metal such as gold or silver. Support legs probably had the appearance of the legs of beasts (lions claws or bulls’ hoofs) or the figures of captives. Entire chairs could also be covered with costly materials of the time.
The ancient Greek chairs, pre-dating Christ by five or six centuries, would include resemblances of some of their Gods, such as Zeus, and could also be decorated with winged sphinxes as well as the feet of beasts.
Roman chairs were typically made of marble and also included sphinxes for decoration. Some early chairs were also known to include ivory carvings of their Gods.
It was in Europe, during the time period historically referred to as the Renaissance, that the chair is generally considered to have become in general use to anyone who could afford one and ceased to be primarily a privilege of state. Since that time, fashion came more into play for the design of the chair vs. its primary function before as being primarily “functional” and not necessarily comfortable. The outstanding characteristic of most chairs until the middle of the 17th century was massiveness and solidity due to the heavy weight of the oak wood that was primarily used for chairs. Often, when not in use, chairs in those days were normally lined-up along the tapestry-hung walls since their padded back panels were covered with needlepoint to blend in with the tapestries colors and design.
The majority of the chairs of all countries until approximately the middle of the 17th century were primarily made of oak without upholstery. When cushioning became popular, leather was sometimes used, then velvet and silk, and more recently less expensive and more durable materials. The Louis XIII chair with cane backs and seats was one of the first chairs that stressed reduced weight.
The 18th Century is generally considered to be the golden age of the chair, especially in France and England, when so many new ideas in design, format, materials and purpose were introduced. Patents for new ideas also started to become the legal basis for ownership of ideas during this time.
While the 19th Century primarily produced chairs of simplicity, the 20th Century saw an increasing use of technology in chair construction with such things as all-metal folding chairs, metal-legged chairs, molded plastic chairs and ergonomic chairs. Due in part to the wide use of radio and especially television, the recliner (easy chair) became a very popular chair form during this period. Television also was responsible for new forms of chairs starting in the 1960’s: the butterfly, beanbag (fabric sewn into a large bag and filled with Styrofoam pellets) and the egg or pod chair and more recently the massage chair. Technology also was responsible for the creation of molded plywood and laminate wood chairs, as well as chairs made of leather or polymers.
The transformation of the 2nd half of the 20th Century industrialized society into an information processing society in which more employees are performing business while sitting for a long period of time has created a very different environment in working in offices that has had a direct influence on the number of employees suffering from chronic back pain.
People are simply sitting incorrectly and therefore abusing their backs, necks and arms. This has led to an increase in a variety of problems such as: general fatigue, varicose veins, stress and problems with the diaphragm, circulation, digestion, and reduced body development. It is estimated that Americans spend over four Billion dollars each year to cure their various ailments as a result of sitting incorrectly!
Is there the perfect chair? Experts believe if one could be invented, many of these physical ailments could be eliminated or at least reduced. Sitting properly would also be of significant help to many people.
A range of chairs includes: armchair, bench, couch, bucket seat, stool, rocking chair, batwing chair, basket chair, bar stool, sky chair, lounger, barber chair, barrel chair and many more.
There is no perfect posture but the chair is the foe of comfort and stability. Chairs are generally not practical and they are hard on us physiologically. On a typical day, the average person in the West sits down daily in approximately two-dozen ill-designed seats.
Part of the problem with chairs is that the seat height has been standardized at 18 inches off the ground, which is supposedly the length of the shin. However, at 18 inches most chairs are most suitable for taller-than-average people. If chairs must be standardized, the length should be in the 14-16 inch range. Or, better yet, multiple-size chairs should be available in public places
Consider how you feel after exercising---refreshed and energized. But, after sitting in a chair for too long, you’re pooling your fluids and reducing circulation, and this can make you feel depressed and lethargic. You are also stressing your structure and your internal organs. You never want flesh to carry the load, bones should. This could actually be a cause of the high incidence of cellulite in this country since in too many cases the flesh is doing the work of the bones.
A good chair allows a person to sit in the perch position that is defined as a stance halfway between sitting and standing---a “sit-stand” where the pelvis rolls forward, the lumbar curve is preserved and the legs are in an oblique angle in relation to the spine.
With the rise of a new middle class during the `19th century, a new breed of craftsmen started to design furniture. They primarily produced what the buying public wanted---comfortable, space-saving, and movable furniture designed to be primarily functional---very important considerations for an upwardly mobile clientele. Perhaps the best examples of the products produced for these reasons would be the reclining chair, the sofa bed, the rocking chair and the folding chair.
The need for comfort was of growing importance that coincided with the invention of a wide variety of springs and a reaction against the generally stiff, unyielding furniture of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Also coming into prominence during the Victorian period was the upholstery trade and the new aesthetic appeal of “stuffed furniture”.
Many nineteenth-century reclining chairs were designed specifically for invalids and the sick. The “Marks improved adjustable folding chair” patented in 1876 was one of the best known of the American invalid chairs and combined the functions of “parlor, library, smoking, reclining or invalid chair, lounge, bed and child’s crib”. Also in this category were wheelchairs and specialized chairs made expressly for barbers, surgeons and dentists.
After a period of decline, the recliner became popular again in the 1950’s with the introduction of the La-Z-Boys and Barcaloungers. Some reclining chairs were described as beds and therefore a close connection between reclining chairs and sofa beds, both of which brought rest and relaxation out of the bedroom and into the living room with the added benefit of an extra bed without an extra bedroom.
While most rocking chairs were bulky and difficult to transport, some were made to fold, representing another important group of 19th century furniture---the highly portable and lightweight folding chair. Folding furniture dates to the beginning of furniture history, having been used by Egyptian royalty as well as by the ancient Greeks and Romans. It subsequently lost favor until the mid-19th century, when hundreds of patents were issued for folding mechanisms.
Also popular were folding chairs that used an X-shaped leg configuration. The most popular and successful one of this type is known today as the “director’s
Chair”.
Patented in 1877 in England, another popular folding chair was the so-called sling chair, made of canvas with either a metal or wooden frame. They are still popular today and are commonly found in stores selling casual outdoor or camping furniture.
Folding chairs come in an immense variety of styles, extent and type of ornament, and materials. More elaborate folding chairs were made by cabinetmaker George Hunzinger who patented a number of variations in the 1860’s and 1870’s. However, the simpler versions survived as the most popular because, by nature, folding chairs are meant to be portable---for use at summer camps, on board ships, and on weekend outings. Even now, plain lightweight folding chairs continue to be manufactured in great numbers.
